PROTOCOLE HEDERA

CONCEPT
"A promising test subject, helped by a mysterious figure, tries to escape
the facility holding her. In this final level, she reaches the director's office."


INTENTIONS & INSPIRATIONS
  • Using the game's guidance to restraint the player's liberty of actions
  • Plot twists and curveball endings : Cyberpunk 2077, Doki Doki Litterature Club, The Stanley Parable, Portal​

GOALS & CONSTRAINTS
  • Peak of the game
  • Upend the player's expectations
  • Created in 15 weeks, as the final project of Level Design class at Campus ADN

Main Hall

  • Teasing the player with their main objective finally in sight, then denying them passage
  • Offers a breather after the combat-heavy previous level

  • Props used to direct the player's path
  • Lighting used to attract player's eyes and interest
  • Highly narrative zone : lore collectibles and a close encounter of the Director
  • Director seen experimenting on test subject
  • Guiding Hedera or telling her off?

Main Hall, again

  • Hedera starts to lose her powers
  • Right side is a dead end and spawns a hidden lore item
  • Left side does not trigger this collectible
  • ​Staircases for valving and loading/unloading sections of the level

  • VFX previously seen on NPCs used on player's POV
  • Hallucinations, doubt of past experiences
  • Guidance?  More like fate!

Final Battle

  • Players can only rely on their Ultimate ability
  • Each Energy Orb refills the Ult bar
  • NME waves are called with each orb
  • Players need to surrender to the medical chair to end the game

  • Build up NME encounters
  • Guide the player away from their objective
  • Using teleports and perspective to create an "Infinity Room" 

OBSTACLES
  • Camera and avatar glitch when teleporting
  • Scripting dept is overwhelmed!

SOLUTION
  • Use a pure level design approach to the "Infinity Room"
  • Loading / Unloading the rooms, using the stairs as safety valves
  • Disorienting the player by flipping the room

END RESULT
  • A continuous, seamless, eerie narrative experience leading to a unique final fight
  • Syncing with VFX dept for improved psychedelia mood
